My female Nijsseni seems te be in bad shap although she does not behave as such. After having skinproblems (kind of fungus on little parts of her body and a sidevin, which is gone now, probably bitten off by the male), which seemed to have disappeared after treatement, her eyes now are popping out and arround the eyes white spots are visable now. By the way, she is eating fine en looks lively.

Any thoughts on saving the fish?

"Pop eye" usually indicates an internal infection. If she is eating well and behaving normal there is hope. Personally, I would put her in small quarantine tank and feed her a food dosed with a broad spectrum antibiotic. If she doesn't eat dry foods, then soak freeze-dried or partly dried frozen food in an antibiotic solution. Even better would be to buy some live adult brine shrimp drain them in a net for 5 - 10 minutes and then put them in an antibiotic solution. Their bodies will absorb the medicine and still be alive when fed the the fish.

Here goes Gerald again sounding like a scratched record (anybody remember what those are?): That sounds like it could be Mycobacterium infection. Head/body sores; swelling or pale discoloration around the nostrils, jaws, anus, or fin joints; bulging eyes, bloating, rapid breathing, spine bending, jaw deformity, color loss or darkening, can all be symptoms. It is not cureable, but with good care (water qual and diet) fish can live for months or years with it and even produce healthy fry. When she stops eating or otherwise looks like there's no saving her, remove her before she dies. If she dies in a tank witrh other fish she may expose them to much higher doses of bacteria that will make the rest of them sick. Myco can sometimes affect many fish, but most often it appears on one fish at a time, slowly, especially as they get old. It is a VERY common but often un-diagnosed disease especially in gouramis, rainbowfish, dwarf cichlids, danios and many others. The aquarium medicine industry would rather ignore it, since they can't sell you anything to effectively treat it.

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
