Images attached. Noticed this today but can’t say whether his eyes have always looked like this. Looked up images online but they are all side profile.

Would appreciate it if the community could weigh in!

I don't believe so given the equalness on both side. My male winkelfleck (approx 2 years old) has similar eyes. He has been kept in near blackwater conditions (ec 25-45).

@MacZ I’ve had him for 2-3 years.

@anewbie ok that is reassuring

One thing i forgot to mention is 3 weeks ago I did see what appeared to be a cotton ball (size of ADA aquasoil granule) on the top of his head.

Also, I did treat an electric blue ram in an isolated quarantine tank for popeye 10 days ago, but cross contamination of water is not out of the question.

Cotton ball (fungus) will occur (and is normal and does not require treatment) if the fishes scrapes himself. If you have hardscape and he gets spooked it is not out of line for him to get a small scratch or scrape.

Here’s a picture of my breeding rack setup. All but the fry tank (mid left) are on a shared sump. I can pull any tank off the sump system and run sponge filters.

Just an fyi i do not share filtration between tanks - there are of course pro/con. The local shop puts in very very strong uv filtration in their shared filtration - no clue how effective it is but that thing is quite powerful (i think vaguely but don't quote me over 100 watt).

Thought so. Old fish tend to develop that pronounced features. be prepared for it to deteriorate in the next months. It is in the last quarter of its life.
I'm not sure this is always true - my winkelfleck had extended eyes now for about 8 months and given his behavior i expect him to live another 18 to 24 months. Of course you might be correct as one can never tell for sure what the future holds.

However my expectation for longevity has grown at least the expectation for the species i've been keeping. Sadly my nijjensi are still rather young so can't comment there but last female lived 4 to 5 years.

Thank you both for the knowledge .

As for my shared sump, there wasn’t a clean way to do an auto water change system without running piping across my floor or around a door frame. I chose the shared sump to lessen the water change burden. Hopefully I won’t regret it as I have with other mistakes I made in my first ever build. Biggest regret is creating a V shape drain line using 1” pvc.. (where water crashes against itself before entering sump). At the time, I thought it was a good idea because my sump inlets are 1” PVC fittings.

I will give heavy consideration to the UV sterilizer though. Did not think of that! Funny since i watched a couple YT videos with one but it did not dawn on me

Just remember low power uvc is mostly to kill algae (green water) it takes a fairly powerful unit to kill bacteria/parasite.

UV lamps don't remain effective for long so they need frequent replacement, at least every year. Also their effectiveness diminishes over time, so it might be best for even more frequent replacement. This can get expensive.

I forget the name of it but the local petshop had a new type of UV thingy - i don't think it used a traditional lamp persey but the whole unit was quite expensive. I should have paid more attention to it when the owner showed it to me - he said it was a prototype of some sort.
