I know this from reading it not experiencing it... so take it for what it's worth (and I'm sure people will soon post to confirm or disagree)...

Males of different species will be less aggressive towards each other than males of the same species... but none the less they will see each other as similar sized Cichlids and may still have territorial issues.

you would get better answer if you specify which species you would like to combine. some are more aggressive, some respond differently towards specific morphological traits, like color or fin shape.
females can also cause problems.

Cockatoo's and Inca

I have a similar question. Can you keep Cockatoo's and Inca's or Trifasciata's together? I have a 40 gallon breeder and would like to keep all of these fish in it, but I am not sure if I would just wind up with one dominant male and loose alot of beautiful fish?

I have had no problem with cacs and tris, however, I would not advise cacs and incas. My triple red had my male incas head in his mouth, luckily I was there watching and intervened. And in talking to the place I bought the incas, they mentioned the guy who bred them had the same issue with incas and cacs. My incas were removed immediately...

Just my 2 cents
