Would I be able to keep the 4 male apistos. and 1 male ram in a 30gal.

What I had in mind were
1 male ram
2 male Borelii and
2 male Cacatuoides

along with some dither fish.(tetras)
and cory cats

or would this be a death match waiting to happen.

Randell - I ordered one of the books that you had suggested. It is on its way.
this one.
Linke, Horst & Dr. Wolfgang Staeck, "American Cichlids I - Dwarf Cichlids," Tetra-Press (1994)

Thanks,
Robert.

If you are planning to keep only males, it is more likely that they will coexist OK together. If there are all the other fish that you listed in the tank, plenty of structure and NO females, everyone should be fine. But keep an eye out, because there is an individual personality issue to worry about. Some fish are just meaner than other. As aspen says, if there is a problem, the borellii will probably get the brunt of it. But I have seen some pretty fiesty borellii, so you never know. Good luck.
