Hi everyone,

I recently got a small group of these guys. They were labeled Laetacara curviceps. I know sometimes those can be mislabled as Laetacara dorsigera. I just wanted to confirm the correct ID on these guys. They are pretty small right now...maybe 1.5 - 2 inches and don't really show much colour. Here are the best photos I could get.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
-duc nguyen.

The hockey stick shaped lateral band that breaks downward onto the gill cover is diagnostic for Laetacara sp. Buckelkopf/Humphead. That's what you have.

Hi,

Thank you all for your feedback! I would never have known they were that species! I did a search for them but I could not locate much information on them. Could you point me in the right direction?

To answer your question, I got these guys from Atlantis. It really doesn't matter what they are to me.:) I'm just happy with healthy fish. I just wanted to know what they were in case they ever spawned, I would know what they were.

I am going to continue to search for more information on these fish. Thanks so much for your input!

Neat fish. I had a pair many years ago. This is another one of 'those' species that has been around for a long time (I had mine in 1993-94) but has not been named yet.

I found that they were easier to get to breed than L. dosigera but harder than L. curviceps. They bred for me in moderately hard water in a planted community tank.

Hi Doc

The guy I bought mine from a few months back also purchased his from Atlantis. My 2 males are in a 75 with some other South Americans currently. The dominant male has claimed the whole tank when it comes to the subdominant male. Just a lot of chasing, no damage. He has staked out about a 8 inch area where he "politely" asks other species not to enter.
