i bought a plant on a whim tonight (i hate doing that) and i am a little puzzled about it. it was labelled 'red cabomba', and i believe i've id'ed it on the tropica d.b. as 'cabomba furcata'. they list a few warnings, esp hight light, co2, and soft water, saying it is a difficult plant. has anyone ever tried this plant, and if so, was it as difficult as they claim? my water is gh8, kh4, ph 7.8, with co2, ph 7.0.

Beautiful plant and not very "easy". It will grow like a weed once you get it started. IME, it tends to do better in direct light with CO2. It looks like burnt orange under intense light. Also make sure you have iron and other nutrients in the water column. It feeds from the roots as well as the water column.

Hope that helped.

that makes sense to me, and was exactly what i want in this plant. great info, thanks. now to get it started. it really is a pretty colour, and is the only red plant in this tank. and, discus will easily swim right through it, unlike a lot of plants. (nice and soft.)

Ric I've got it growing at 2 wpg and no co2 added. It still gets red on top but is maroon lower down the stem. I've seen it when grown uder extremely bright lights with co2 added and it can become a bright pink/red under the right conditions.

very interesting! did you have a hard time getting it started? mine is in quarentine now, in a 5 gal tank under a 13 watt cool white lamp with no co2, it seems to have maintained it's health and seems to have grown a bit since last week. hopefully i'll transfer it to the 35 gal with a full set of roots in good shape in another week or so.

thanks for the feedback. this plant really looks nice, and i look forward to seeing it growing nicely in my planted tank. the colour is quite stunning. multicoloured red, orange and yellow, like a deciduous forest in the fall colour change.
