blackwater tank cycling?

A window into my 95 (48x24x18 in ineches l,w,h):

Someone told me that ruby tetra would hide all the time but i can always find 15 or 20 of them in there so not sure why others think they hide.

The ones above don't have a lot of blue - and i was doing water changes on the basement aquariums today and i noticed the rubies down there have a lot more blue on their fin - this is a weak example but they are rater disobedient when i ask them to pose for pictures:

Hum. Mrs google suggest it has to do with lighting and not the actual fish - interesting because some of them have a whole lot of blue. This aquarium is a bit more open then the one above that is the 95.

Oh well you or at least I learn something new everyday.

I don't know, I bought eight, I was down to three at one point, and now have about 15. They have never shoaled, they've always splintered into the jungle, where they hold pretty much motionless in their spot.

Some mosquito larvae really get them going, but they tend to spar with one another, even at that time.

Mrs google suggest it has to do with lighting and not the actual fish - interesting because some of them have a whole lot of blue.

Same for me, I'm pretty sure it is the fish, some of mine are deep red with prominent pale blue flash, and others are much paler all around.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there is local colorforms of these aswell.
It could also be a hierarchial thing within the group, i guess.

Yes, Axelrodia riesei. Ember Tetra are Hyphessobrycon amandae.

very different in looks and behavior. Mine tend to be a bit more active then ember but not super active - they are also slimmer - more red then orange and have black spot near the tail. My understanding is ruby are more sensitive to water hardness - since i've always kept mine in near blackwater conditions i can't comment on how adaptable they are to harder water.

I prefer ruby because they are a bit more active then ember and will quasi school but not tightly school - i will say collect together. Also they will show a lot of boldness at times that ember lack. They have no problem trying to steal food from my krib frys something ember would never do (my krib 'frys' are now nearly the size of the ruby tetra so not eactly frys per say).

Did water changes on 16 of the aquariums downstair and took pictures of two of them - from the front and top down:

The first one is the n. teugelsi:

The aquarium has been setup since late april/early may so the plants are haven't hit their growth spurt yet but they seem to be doing well in a short time. As for the large number of fishes near the top those are f1 frys. They are not shy at all and fequently go to the top esp when i'm near and they think i'll put in food. THe parents on the other hand prefer to always have a leaf over them - they aren't scared of me but i guess they are worried about birds or something.... something the frys haven't learned.

There are a large number of frys maybe 30 or 40 and i hope to start giving them away later this month or early oct.

This is the well i'm not sure what it is 29 - it was going to be a. lineata but i couldn't acquire them then uaupesi but i ended up with 2 females - there is a male and female a. ladisalo in the back (not a pair). i see the female maybe once every 2 weeks and the male around once every 9 or 11 months - they were very out going until i moved them from the 65 to this aquarium (at the time nothing else was in here) and they never forgave me for catching them (the 65 was a shared aquarium with ib and i thought they would prefer an aquarium to themselves but i was mistaken).

I recently added 3 a. bitaentia - the sure female was doa so i have 2 definite male and maybe a female. If it turns out to be a her i will probably remove the other fishes and make it species only but these orphans are problematic to find good homes.

This aquarium been setup for a while maybe 18 or 24 months not sure; the dithers are emerald eye rasbora (one day the will age out - the sooner the better) some pink lip monsters (which are really quite nice looking - for some reason both them and the n. marilyn were showing very good colours after the water change).

I suppose it is over populated a bit - but nothing wants to die
