Dear Bissot J,

A. staecki is endemic to Bolivia where it was first collected by Dr. Wolfgang Staeck in 1983, for whom the fish is named.

In Linke & Staeck's book, American Cichlids I Dwarf Cichlids, Tetra-Press 1994, there is an excellent description of the fish as well as many others. The book is available in soft cover form as well and makes for very nice reading.

All the best,

Randall Kohn

Bissot_J,
Although some suggest that A. staecki requires very soft, acidic water for successful reproduction, I have not found this to be necessarily the case. In my experience they were not difficult to deal with. In a tank of closer to neutral water in regards to pH (6.3 -6.5), they spawned and reared young without problem. However, as with all my breeding tanks, the water was pretty soft (mostly RO). Their clutches, however as I recall, were not particularly large. This might be reflctive of the fact that more acidic water is warrented.
They are subtly beautiful little animals and are a nica addition to your upcoming fishroom.

but this book is very rare :(

This is one of the more common books available on South American Dwarf Cichlids. You should be able to find it numerous places on the internet, though large book e-retailers such as Amazon, etc. Although I don't know for sure, I wouldn't be suprised if the ASG has copies for sale. The trip is finding someone to ship to you.

Dear Bissot J,

As Neil stated, the subject book is one of the more popular, commonly available sources currently available. Any pet trade retailer should be able to order it for you. You should also be able to get it through Amazon.com. The American Cichlid Association (ACA) has had it for sale though their website, cichlid.org, for several years as well.

I dont' know where you are located, but Tetra-Press is one of the larger publishers of its kind. The original German edition is published by Tetra Werke in Germany.

Good luck.
