this is a friend's apistogramma panduro as you can see half of its mouth is missing probably after a fight with the fem which is guarding fry

are they so agressive or is it just this fem?

the fish is eating and behaves normally

A. panduro is one of the more aggressive apistos, but this kind of damage is very unusual. This species usually forms a temporary pair bond when they have eggs & fry. Your friend's fish may not have been bonded well enough. Hopefully the male does OK. He's a nice looking fish.

I have had at two different times this happen to me. Both times was the male and a cranky female. I suspect both times the male wasn't as readdy to breed as the female.

One was in a four footer and one in a two footer so wasn't space. Both time fungus set in real quick and they keeled over real quick.

Watch out for fungus - can be pretty quick to kill.
