Well, they seem to be doing just fine. I had 2 pairs in the same tank, but had to separate them rather quickly. The dominant male simply would not allow it. Anyway, I am keeping the water super clean, and as soon as they are conditioned to my satisfaction, I will begin adding DI and rainwater to the tank slowly, and hope for a spawn. I would love to do RO but it just isn't in the cards right now. If need be i'll begin treating the water with peat. Any advice from you experts?

You are doing what I would suggest. They are very difficult to breed. Very low TDS, pH, and nitrates are probably mandetory.

In addition to what Neil suggests, people who have successfully spawned Maulbruter report that the spawning tank(s) had a sandy substrate. Apparently, gravel is too big and bulky for them.

Dear B.,

I think any course sand will do, just so long as one avoids sand with crushed coral. Playbox type sand may be too fine and promote anaerobic bacterial growth.

j, always do the acid test on any sand that you want to use. if the acid bubbles, forget it. i use muriatic, but any of the stronger acids will do. (it is eating carbonates when it bubbles) forget the vinegar test, it has proven unreliable. and rinse, rinse rinse, before you put it in the tank. sand is nice, i use it in one of my tanks. all of the stuff sits on top.

Good to find some names from the daah forum here .
My juveniles are doing great .I'm hoping to raise a second spawn soon.
The juvies are now sexable.

The fry started to free swim last night.The females attacks toward the male got a bit nastier.I decided then to move the male to another tank.
The fry got their first tour of the tank this morning.The female moved them from the pit they stayed in the last three days to another one,in the middle of the tank, near a clump of java moss.Probably to let the fry feed on infusoria found on the java moss.They eagerly took freshly hatched BBS right away.I counted at least 25 fry near Mom.The female seems to be more relaxed now since the male was moved.She picks up strays with her mouth,just like other Apisto Moms do ,and spits them back out into the school.Nothing like the mouthbrooding behavior she displayed earlier after the eggs just hatched.
The first photos didn't turn out to good since the female keeps the fry in the middle of the tank.I'll try again tonight.
I'll keep you posted.

Yes, those eggs were bright cherry red.
I did see wigglers .
The female carried them in her mouth for a day or two.
She dug quite a few hollows near plant roots to hide the wigglers in when she wanted to eat.
I keep my pair in a 10g with sand substrate( which I think is important for this species, they love to dig for food and hide their youngens in the sand) ,the usual hiding spots and some plant cover.Unfortunately, I didn't get any free swimming fry yet.It seems that my pair spawns regulary every two weeks after Wc's with pure R/O water.I 'll try to move the male after the next spawn,if this doesn't work I 'll steal the eggs next.Or move Murphy, our cat, out of the room.She loves to watch my lower level tanks in the evening.I took some more pictures of the male this weekend and post them soon.
