Took a look in the tank this morning and voila.

This is my first time ever having any type of fish breed for me.

My plan was to keep them in the 10g tank for now, and then move them to their own grow out tank. In the tank they are in it's Ma and PA, 2 otto cats and 3 black tetras. How long can I leave them with the parents?

Any tips/advice is welcome.

Congratulations and a great fish to have as your first successful spawn. I think we all remember our first.

Good news and keep up the good work :)

Congrats on the new spawn, its always very exciting.

My recent experience with A. baenschi was coming home from holidays to find a new spawn, probably about 3 - 4 days free swimming, they stayed closely bunched up with mum escorting them for about 2 more weeks, and then I found the fry started to scatter in the tank and mum would just defend the general area. 4 - 5 weeks from free swimming the female had spawned again and was chasing her previous spawn away but not eating them, and only chasing them away from the immediate vicinity of the new spawn site.

At this stage I pulled out the fry into their own grow out tank. Spawn was in a larger tank (100cm x 40cm) so that may influence the female's behaviour to both the male and the growing fry.

Definitely A. baenschi are not on most peoples' list of "beginners' species."

Hey Dave,

The Flame Red A. agassizi looks less than vigorous. are you finding them a bit feeble like the xanthanistic form of A. cacatuoides? At least my impression has been that they were not as sturdy as more pigmented color varieties.

Thats a toughie--the cacatuoides wouldnt spawn females but these do, in fact my clutches are around 50-50---on the other hand I am finding it difficult to get my second generation to spawn. They do seem healthy to me. Mine came from a different source though--I got mine from the Wilhelm's where they were first found. Any coming from Glasers are from Czsch

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
