Morning All,

I went to my local LFS and bought 3wild Jurensis 1M and 2F. Apart from reading the Mergus books etc and implementing the basic Apisto tank parameters, can anybody give me additional hints on this beautiful looking fish ? cheers Jan-kurt :)

First of all, I would check that it is really A. juruensis that you bought. It would be a sensational find, since it hardly ever was exported from Brazil. Brazil is a keyword here, because if your fish were imported from Peru (which I suspect), it is most likely the undescribed species A. sp. "Black-chin".

Male A. sp. "Black-chin" are different from A. juruensis in lip colour, where A. jururensis like A. cacatuoides has blue lips, "Black-chin" has yellow/orange lips. "Black-chin" males come in two different colour forms: blue and yellow. The yellow form has speckled yellow and black pelvic fins.
A. juruensis males only come in one colour form.
Female "Black-chin" in brood dress show a characteristic T-shaped black chin (hence the name). A. juruensis females in brood dress should never show black markings on the chin. Male "Black-chin" also has a black chin marking depending on mood.

Both A. juruensis and "Black-chin" share a characteristic that separate them from A. cacatuoides. They have a caudal spot that is clearly separated from the lateral stripe. The separation is only about a scale wide, but it is there. The lateral stripe of A. cacatuoides is continuous with the caudal spot.

If you have the "Black-chin", which is most likely scenario IMO, they spawned for me in soft water with a pH around 6. My only spawn so far, still tended by mother, was quite prolific. Around 100 youngsters or so.

Good luck,
Lars

Are these the ones that came through Bay.

I was looking at a pair the other day up here in Brisbane and the male appeared to havesome red specking on the gill plate? Thought that was strange. Female did have black chin - male didn't. Only a young pair.

Would be interested to see some pictures.

Hi,

Very beautiful, but they are not A. juruensis. As Lars explained, your fish are A. sp. Schwarzkinn/Black-chin.

regards,
Rolo

I have collected this beautiful species in the wild on several occasions.
The dorsal fin is quite spectacular on wild fish.

(The local people, as well as the exporters, call it “juruensis”)

You can see photos here.

I have the blue color morph of A. sp. Schwarzkinn/Black-chin. As Lars wrote, they need acid, moderately soft water. With the correct water conditions, they are very prolific. I find that my male causes many losses of spawns. He is very "pushy" when the female has fry and he is easily twice her size. She often gives up and the fry are lost. Only when I remove him do I get reasonable spawns. It may be best to have 2 or more females to keep the male busy in other ways.

I also found the male very pushy, but my pair now have declared a kind of truce, ever since they killed the dithers (3 Nannostomus marginatus).

Some of the youngsters always seemed to end up in the males end of the tank, where they were accepted. Mother "Black-chin" did not appreciate this, and tried to "steal" then back. Very amusing to watch, but I always have a feeling that everything could explode in a minute. Definitely an agressive species!

Every time the importers of my country called me saying "We´ve juruensis", they´ve got A. cf. eunotus.

No matter how many times I described the A. juruensis.

Really, they don´t care about id´s (you really can´t missidentified juruensis with cf. eunotus).

It's sounds like the fishy version of Henry Ford's famous comment about his first cars,
" They can have any color they want as long as it is black."
