agassizis in a 20 long

How many pairs/groups (males) of Apisto. agassizi can I feasibly keep in a 20 gallon long 30" x 12" x 12"? I wouldn't mind just having the one pair in there, but am wondering if having a subordinate male or two around would keep the top male looking better. If I were to go with multiple males, how many females per male would be best? I'd like the 20 gallon to serve as their breeding tank as well. Would having multiple pairs in there compromise my ability to do this?

It really depends on how the tank is decorated. If it is filled wall to wall & top to bottom with plants and brush so that no one fish can see the other fish for very long, then you could keep 2 males & 3 or 4 females - actually it will turn out to be a harem + an extra male. If it is a normally decorated aquarium, then I would only keep 1 male and 2 or 3 females maximum in it. If you add a second male, there is a fair chance that it will be killed. As long as the male has a female ready to breed, he will display for you. The only problem that might appear is if 2 or more females produce fry at the same time & the male can't get out of their brood territories. He could be killed if not removed. I must admit that for an experienced breeder I am rather conservative on numbers, but for the average apisto keeper it is better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for the info. The tank will have java moss across the whole back and sides. There will also be a leaf pile, a driftwood pile, a few crypts and other plants. From what you describe, I may just stick with a single pair (will this be a problem?). The website I'm buying off of has the fish listed as pairs, but maybe they'll sell me a trio. From watching how my female baenschi is going after my male at the moment, it's probably safer that way.
