So Mrs. Google thinks that if i recycle water and rerun it through ro with base tds of 20 i will eventually get ph crash as low as ph 3 and kill off all the bacteria causing the fishes to die. In addition despite fishes coming from native water with ec 20 that the fishes will die from osmoic shock (long term) and lack of mineral to build bones.

So i guess there a few questions here:
Can the ph actually get too low to sustain the fishes or would the fishes be harmed if the ph fluxtuated between 3 and 6
Do the fishes require trace minerals to build bones et all and would this requirement extend beyond fish food provided
Is Mrs. google full of it and can be safely ignore as spitting out non-sense ?

Hi all,

Mrs Google is a bit behind with recent research into nitrification. She needs to have a chat with Ms Google Scholar - <"https://pubs.acs.org/esthag/article.../1481380/No-Nitrification-in-Lakes-Below-pH-3">.
In addition despite fishes coming from native water with ec 20 that the fishes will die from osmoic shock (long term) and lack of mineral to build bones.
There is research looking at the effects of humic substances on fish health in acidic waters - <"https://journals.biologists.com/jeb...lobal-change-and-physiological-challenges-for">. I'd also guess diet is more important than water composition.
So i guess there a few questions here:
Can the ph actually get too low to sustain the fishes or would the fishes be harmed if the ph fluxtuated between 3 and 6
Depends on the fish, "blackwater" fish really are different. I tend to ignore pH once we get near pure H2O, it is a total moveable feast.
Is Mrs. google full of it and can be safely ignore as spitting out non-sense ?
AI is getting better, but it will be a while before it sorts the wheat from the chaff.

"Nitrification", "pH" and " buffering" are three areas where most of the discussion is either "wrong", "very wrong" or "totally and completely wrong"

Hi all,

Mrs Google is a bit behind with recent research into nitrification. She needs to have a chat with Ms Google Scholar - <"https://pubs.acs.org/esthag/article.../1481380/No-Nitrification-in-Lakes-Below-pH-3">.
On the basis of the results from stable isotope investigations and the examination of a metadata set we conclude that the lower limit for nitrification in lakes is around pH 3.

The above is the conclusion of the paper you linked (the full paper is behind a paywall); so doesn't this mean mrs google is correct that if you can achieve ph 3 or lower nitrification stops ? Mind you stable ph below 3 is very difficult in the home aquarium but ....

Re-designing and starting a new fish room all over again. This time we'll have many more Apistsogramma species. We are expanding.

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
