Hi, I've recently obtained a wild pair each of A. sp "rotkeil" and A.sp "blutkehl". Are they both variants of A. uaupesi? Or are they undescribed?

Thanks.

A. sp. Rotkeil is the same species as A. uaupesi. A. sp. Blutkehl appears to be a different species, although closely related. The primary difference is in the dark markings. On A. sp. Blutkehl the vertical bars on the posterior half of the body are more pronounced below the lateral band than on A. uaupesi. In many respects, A. sp. Blutkehl is a species intermediate between A. uaupesi and A. iniridae.

Thanks a lot for the answer. So blutkehl is a different undescribed species whereas rotkeil is a variant of A.uaupesi?

Hi,

...but not everyone shares this opinion.
Römer & Staeck e.g. put them all together in A. uaupesi.

But you also have to differentiate between the A. sp. Blutkehl and the "Blutkehl"-morph of A. uaupesi. A. uaupesi is polychromatic and there is a "Rotkeil"-morph with a red coloured caudal and a "Blutkehl"-morph with red markings on the cheeks. But this colourmorph of A. uaupesi is not the same as A. sp. Blutkehl.
A. uaupesi is from Rio Negro drainage, A. sp. Blutkehl ist the related form/species from the Orinoko drainage. Both have the same ancestral origin, but they are separated now, like some other species, too, e.g. A. diplotaenia, where also similar but different forms are located in the Rion Negro and the Orinoco drainage.

regards,
Rolo
