A. sp. "Inca" - High-finned Nijsenni

There is a new species that has currently not made its' way to the US yet, but a few have hit Japan. It is a pretty impressive species out of Peru, but I have no more specific info about it than that. Julio Melgar will be sending some of these to the US in a few weeks and it will probably make its debut at the ACA convention. I am sure it will carry a fairly stiff pricetag initially and then drop off as the buzz subsides.
It is another member of the nijsenni group, which seems to be getting quite a lot of attention lately. Like the not-quite-as-new Lyretail Panduro (which has many similarities to the original Panduro), the High-finned Nijsenni is a very similar species to the original. However, it looks to be interesting enough to create a stir for awhile. Take a look.

These are the only pics of this new species around right now, but you can see that it has some pretty good qualities. Note the oval tail of the female.
The Japanese have gotten this fish before anyone else again. I am sure it is because they were down there when it was first collected with a fistfull of $. Those are some motived aquarists in Japan 8O . I guess they deserve to get this kind of stuff first, because they are willing to pay a premium to get it.
Keep your eyes out - it won't be long.

Jeffery Doty,

WELCOME TO THE FORUM

Those pics are nice, aren't they? 8O I especially like the females. The vertical striping in suggestive of the sp."Tigerstripe", but on a nijsenni body. I wonder how much variability there is in the color and black marking on these new fish. The male appears to me to be quite similar to the regular nijsenni, except for the dorsal. A pretty good addition to an already nice fish.
It looks like I will be getting a few of these fish in this coming week, but I never really know until it happens. If so, I will be trying to get a few pics of my own up before to long. I probably will have a very limited supply of these fish for sale right now, but it won't be long before they are around with more regularity, I'm sure.
Really nice to have you aboard! :) Maybe we can trade so of my apistos for some of your discus. It has been awhile since I have played with them. Looks like you guys carry a couple of pretty nice ones.

Neil,

WOW! You sure know how to make a guy feel welcome! I can see I will enjoy visiting this very nice forum quite often.

If the the High-finned Nijsenni that you get look anything like the pictures they will be something to covet. That is the beauty of having dedicated and experienced hobbiests such as yourself, you have the ability and skills to spawn these beauties and let us Apisto-amatures have a go with them.

You should talk to Yvan, he has some babies from his wild Blue Face Heckel and Alenquer pair. They are about 2 inch and showing a very light hint of color. Not to mention, very fine shape. I am sure you could pique his interest with some of the Apistos you have available!
:D :D

Thanks again for the nice welcome.

neil, there are some of us discus-a-holics on this forum. if you are thinking about getting some discus and raising them out, be sure to visit 'discus as a hobby'

http://www.discusobsession.com/cgi-bin/yabb//YaBB.pl

where jeff is a mod, esp the general discussion area, and the library. the library contains many articles written by the late jim e quarles, a friend of mine and jeff's. i consider the daah library to be the BEST internet resource for discus related info. be prepared to change a LOT of water. i have 13 discus up to 6" in a 90 gal tank, and i religiously change the tank down to 10 gals, every day. but changing water is the single best thing that you can do to grow nice discus to a good size.

discus and dwarf cichlids are a great combination, and make a stunning display, in a planted tank. discus are a lot of work, but imo, they are worth it. try to stay away from discus and angels. imo, it is not a good combo, for a variety of reasons.

jeff, this is a really nice forum. there are lots of interested hobbiests and pros here. but, if you haven't gone to the 'member list' (at the top of the page) and browsed the member's websites yet, you have missed something. there are a LOT of great sites on that list, both professionals and hobbiests.

aspen and Jeff,
I have worked with discus in the past and have had reasonable success with them. Although I did not do 85% water changes daily, they were still a little more work than what I could easily manage with all my other fish tasks. However, I am getting a little better at dealing with 70 tanks.
I knew Jim Quarels too. He lived a few miles away from me and was a member of the Sacramento Aquarium Society.
I checked out the Discus Forum and it is pretty cool. looks like a good resource for those interested them. Were not to far off from Fall and winter and my real job will be easing off a little. Maybe I will have to take the plunge again.
By the way, there was a problem, as usual, with the Incas. It will be a little while longer before I get my grubbies on any. But as to how long, I am not sure.

neil, you would be doing real well making a swap with jeff for some of his discus. i haven't seen his discus personally (he's in oregon, i'm in toronto) but lots of people are pleased with his fish. he's also petty picky about what he ships, and what doesn't make the cut. red turks would be a good fish for you to get more exp with. i wouldn't personally bother growing out less than 10. any less than 6 and you will likely have agression, then health problems. 10 fish are the same work as 6, and you get to keep the best and sell the rest for more than your initial money (or trade).

i am initially moving my 2 adult red turks into my planted tank when it is finished, and will add more when they are ready. imo, bb is the only way to grow out decent discus. kiss (keep it simple stupid) works well with discus. there are LOTS of conflicts that you don't need with tankmates and esp gravel with juvie discus. a simple bb species tank works really good.

Danny,

WELCOME TO THE FORUM

Unfortunately, still nothing has happened about the Incas. They has had arrival dates 2 or 3 times and nothing has come of it. To the best of my knowledge, even though they are advertized as such, there are none currently available in the US. As soon as they are, I am sure that we will here about it.

Unfortunately they don't have them. They were shipped the incorrect fish. I am not sure when they will be able to get them either.

Nope, not yet! I am in contact with them and, again, they are supposed to have the fish shipped in a week or so. It has been the same for several months. Hopefully, it will be here this time or sometime soon.
