Question from an apisto beginner... I recently purchased a pair of "orange flash" that I don't think is a pair. I have a nice male but the "female" looks like a smaller double red male. It has the red spotted coloration in dorsal and tail fins. It does have a yellowish tint but I know that smaller males can sometimes show that. What are the visual clues to look for to determine sex?

Small domestic strains of A. cacatuoides are hard to sex because both sexes can show bright colors on the fins. Once the fish get to 5-6 cm/2-2½" it becomes much easier. Females will not show a pattern in the tail other than color and it will not develop caudal tips at the top and bottom of the tail (until they get to be quite large and old). The dorsal fin is different in the sexes, of course.

Even though domestic strains may show some color, a female orange flash is pretty much uniformly one solid color. If s/he has black or dark markings as all then s/he is probably not an orange flash.
