    Apistogramma fry die off

I have a 20g long with about 40 apistogramma panduro fry from 5-15mm long. They get twice daily bbs and weekly 40% water changes. A few have been scooting along the bottom (maybe 3 or 4). I figured they just needed culling. Came in this morning and a few were hovering at the top and 4 of the...

    Cockatoo question

There is a store called Aquaium Adventure in Cleveland (I worked at the one in Columbus) that is about as big as a Petsmart but sells only fish. They should stock apistos fairly regularly and if they have any they will have cacatuoides. They will certainly order them for you if they don't have...

    Apistogrammas outside in Summer?

Maybe use screen that is large enough to admit mosquitos. Just a suggestion.

    help with hongsloi

I was able to spawn hongsloi in water with a ph of 7.2, gh of 120ppm, and kh of 60ppm (my tap water). Unless you've got liquid rock coming out of the tap, I'd keep them in tap water untill they are fully grown out (easier to do water changes). Once they look like they are of breeding age, you...

    breeding water

I've simulated mini-dry seasons, by using harder water, cutting back on water changes, and feeding only two or three times a week for two or three weeks. Then when a low pressure system comes through, I did a big water change with 100% RO,dropped ph over several days, and fed copious ammounts...

    Red tip Caca

Red tip caca? A. cacatuoides maybe? A google search will tell you. IF that's what they are, they are probably the most common, and easiest to spawn apisto. Here in the states they sell for $15 a pair + $20 shipping from breeders, or $15-20 per fish at stores. Not sure on conversion rates.

    Is my water apisto friendly

your water would probably be considered moderately hard. That doesn't mean you can't get apsitos to spawn in it successfully though. I would bet that cacatuoides will certainly spawn in your water. Borellii would probably do fine as well.

    References to Sci papers wanted.

I'd like to locate some literature on the effects of hardness and ph on spawning in SA fish, or any papers where the results might have a bearing on our sect of the hobby. Pseudo scientific papers would be good also, but I'm really looking for journal articles and the like. If it's linkable...

    Badis Info

Zapisto, you gave instructions to artificially hatch the eggs. Is this neccessary? Do the adults show any kind of parental care if left alone?

    pairing and breeding bolivian ram

based on my experience (limited) and research, bolivian rams take much longer to reach sexual maturity than blue rams. I had a male female pair that were full sized (3-4 in) for four months and saw no sign of spawning.

    Questioning "bare-bottomed" gorw-out

I am currently growing out about 25 hongsloi fry in a bare bottomed 20g long tank. The fry get live bbs at least once if not twice a day. Tank gets 50% WC weekly. Right next to this tank is a sand bottomed breeding tank that is overrun with java moss, algea, water lettuce, and has a...

    Apisto Community?

I'm far from knowledgable on this topic, but will give my 2 cents. I don't think aggression would be a problem since you would be doing something of a controlled overstocking situation (like people do with mbuna). I see it in dealer tanks with apistos all the time. I imagine this situation...

Can you teach an apisto to eat snails?

I can vouch for the fact that A. cacatuoides do eat larval snails. I had a harem in a heavily planted 29g. No algea eaters so plants were looking a little dingy, and the handful of pond snails weren't keeping up. Long story short, I introduced some hatchet fish that released some kind of...

    cross breeding

If I'm off here I appologize, but are you asking because you WANT to cross breed apistos? If so, I will respectfully ask you not to. If you must, please make sure that NONE of the fry leave your property (not even if the person your giving them too knows what they're getting) I believe most...

    Trade my Apistos?

I would suggest taking the cories back and keeping the apistos with the cardinals. Apistos are way more interesting to watch than cories.
