Another thing I noticed about these fish is that the male has black on the ventral fins. He has red edging on the tail fin, dorsal extension and elongated ventrals, so I am 90% positive its a male. Has anyone else seen male Inca with black ventrals?
Thanks blueblue, so it is normal to see ugly wild caught specimens. Well I hope I can look after my fish well so they fatten up and become nice. Hopefully my male can grow his dorsal extensions out aswell with soft water and good food:)

I would have thought they could be sexable at 2-2.5cm as the males should have slightly longer dorsal lappets?

Yes I meant in regards to spawning them in a 10 gallon. I generally use about 3 medium sized pieces of driftwood to create a number of 'out of view' regions in the tank. Hopefully this works. Also where you put the cave is important, correct.

It is defenitely a pair as their is obvious sexual dimorphism present. Today the female has started digging gravel out from within caves which is often a pre-spawning ritual so I think she is almost ready. I might put the male back in tomorrow and see what happens.
