I m going to search a new apisto, the main choice are betwin A.Panduro and A.Nijesseni, the different from the 2 Apistos is little (I think)
So, for the guru of the portal, what is the best apistogramma to breed?

Hi all,
I m going to search a new apisto, the main choice are betwin A.Panduro and A.Nijesseni, the different from the 2 Apistos is little (I think)
So, for the guru of the portal, what is the best apistogramma to breed?
Assuming that you have a good Apistogramma habitat and plenty of live food, Apistogramma panduro are easier to get fry from, mainly because they don't need water that is quite as soft and acidic as A. nijsseni.

Hopefully "rr16" will comment as he has spawned both species recently.

Have a look at <http://apisto.sites.no/fish.aspx?fishIndexID=2384&gruppeID=1> & <http://apisto.sites.no/fish.aspx?fishIndexID=2387&gruppeID=1>

I believe that <"pairing can be problematic"> in all nijsseni group Apistogramma, because a male and a female isn't necessarily a pair.

cheers Darrel

Thanks a lot in particular for website :)
I think I will search and buy A.Panduro in particular because my RO system isn't really good, so the TDS in water that come out isn't to much low..
Thanks :)

For now I prefer some easy fish :)
So I already buy 1m 2f of A.Panduro..
I'm not sure the 2 fem thing will last long, I'm doing it with cacatoides in a 30 long but panduros are a lot more aggressive, especially the females.. mine actually hunts and kills snails when in spawn, i doubt shed let another female swim around. may want to remove the odd fem. After a pair is formed.

I don't think that this species formed pair..The male only prefer most one female..

Your caca are wild? This panduro are commercial, their aggressive is too low than wild

I have spawned A. nijsseni recently but my female unfortunately disappeared. Not sure if the male killed her or she died. I didn't want to pull the tank apart looking as the male still had a small number of fry he was looking after. The pH is low on this tank though, usually between about 4 and 5. As far as I could see the spawning was only small but have never had big spawnings in this tank when set up as it is. I'm tempted to tear it apart and start again as it's a planted tank and not ideal for apistos. So, my male nijsseni breeding is coming to an end (perhaps one day I will have a fish room and enough room to do this seriously). As for panduro - I have a pair upstairs who spawn regularly but have only managed to raise fry once. Due to my lack of space these fry are in the tank still and are getting big enough to move on still. As long as the adults are not breeding, they tend to leave them alone. In my experience the panduro have been easier but I have very soft water and the pH in that tank is around 5-6 usually. It tends to very as the carbonate hardness is so low.
When I first bought the female panduro and male nijsseni they were young and had been sold them as a panduro pair. They bred and raised some fry. I wouldn't advise this as you can't get rid of hybrid fry as it's just not worth polluting the natural species/strains that are out there and people will forget that they are hybrids and move them on. It was an accident and I can't bring myself to kill them. Interestingly, both parents cared for the fry until the male nijsseni drove the female away and looked after the remainder himself. It could be my individual fish, or it could be somethingcommon in nijsseni, I don't know. Good luck with the A. panduro, but you'll probably have to get rid of the spare female once one of them pair. I find having a LOT of leaf litter and wood, as well as floating plants really helps with the aggression as they can escape each other and hide.
Once they do spawn, they tend to be very good parents, but ensure you have bogwood with caves and crevices as my female always liked to leave her fry on the wood in depressions and would keep them close to the wood to feed on the microorganisms feeding on it.

The tank looks very nice for apistos, i think they will enjoy their stay :)

It's sometimes really hard to get good pictures of the fish. I know that trouble. But from what i can see, they look quite healthy, no bitten fins, etc.
Both females still yellow, or one more white/grey?

Just keep an eye on your girls. If one of them turns white/grey for too long, make sure to take her out. Panduro males can be quite harsh, especially when the females are not ready for spawning yet. Though your male really looks young, so you might not have much trouble for ne next few weeks, untill he starts getting into the "complicated" age. ;-)

Thanks, when the light turn on I will post some panoramic pics :)

The fish came in my tank only two days ago, so they are already a little bit stressed..
About the fins..The make has a little little bitten in the caudal fin..but not worried :)
The two f now are in opposit part of the tank, fortunately, and they look calm :)

Yes, also for me they are young, I think that they haven't got more than one years old :)

Though they dont look like fighting at all ;)
usually they boast their fins and show them off. Getting way more intense yellow/black than yours. They don't look like fighting to me.
They biting each other? One of them fleeing allready?

I don't think the male has a problem, just because he swims up and down in front of the glass. Many fish do this in new aquariums. My panduro did as well!
I always think "maybe he is pursuing his mirrorimage on the glas?", because they often show off their fins and colors in front of the glass.
