Hello everyone,
I live in Peru so I have available wildcaught apistos and have my eyes fixated in Agasizii or Cacatuoides.
I know wild caught apistos are specially sensible to pH. My water is 7.1 in pH. Do you think it will be low enough?Which of the two species can tolerate higher pH?

Thanks in advance!

Both will tolerate neutral pH values however both prefer lower values, around pH 6.5 or lower. I've collected both species in Peru in waters even lower, below pH 6.0. Of the 2, A. cacatuoides would be more tolerant of your values.

I`ve heard good and bad things about using sphagnum moss to lower the pH. What are the pros and cons? Could it drop the ph so much that it would hurt my fish? How long does it last?

We have a few threads about <"using sphagnum peat">.

It lot is going to depend on the amount of carbonate buffering of the water, pH has limitations as a measure, do you have a TDS (conductivity) meter? If you know the conductivity of the water it should give an idea of how easy it would be to reduce pH.

I live in Oregon,by Eugene. I often pull big hunks of moss off big mature
white oak trees. I pull it off with a slight backing, almost like a fish skin and put in my Aquariums for the Apistos and SA cichlids. They like it, it takes several months to break down and they often peruse or hide in it as it expands. That and Oak leaves. Chris
