my male firemouth has 6 small round white spots on the front of his dorsal fin.3 on each side, i have used melafix for the past ten days and done water changes as recommended but they are still there.(i would add a picture but dont know how.lol) , and he keeps flaring up. no other signs of illness so i am wondering if this might be something other than a fungal infection !

Sounds like ick. Is it rubbing against items in the tank? I use a number of ick meds and they seem to work quite well.

It might be lymphocystis. This is a virus that forms waxy or cauliflower-like growths, usually on the fins. Being a virus, antibiotic are useless. Fortunately a healthy fish will cure itself under excellent water conditions.

I agree with Mike, sounds like lymphocystis.

In the unique 2007 importation with M. ramirezzi I bought 10 juveniles, two of them with "cauliflower" growths.

Now, 3 months later, and without drugs, the two fishes are excellent, without any traces of those growths.

But you have to give them excellent water, handle them with care and pay attention that there are no fights in the tank with those fishes.

thank you

i have left him alone now and the water conditions have been monitored twice daily for nearly three weeks. what you described as cauliflower growths was spot on and now they seem to have 'popped' and are disappearing. it didn't look like any fungal infection i'd ever seen before, thanks for the advice.
