What happened to my Agasizzi?

Hi,

I recently set up a 3ft tank for my Agasizzii (he was called Andre). He had been in a 10gallon all on his own for about a year. There were a pair of Bolivan Rams, and a feeder fish (3cm long). The tank obviously hadn't cycled yet but it had been running for 2/3weeks with just the male Bolivan ram.. then another week with an added female ram. I ran water changes everyother day to keep up with the changing Ammonia, Nitrate etc levels.

Tank has a hang-on box filter.. I have no idea what it's called, but it holds one litre of water. There's a 200watt heater, set at 26degrees centigrade, a 30watt light, a large piece of diftwood, numerous caves.. plants etc. Really just a giant version of my 10gallon tank.

The first few days with my Agasizzii were fine. He decided that he had to make very inch of the tank his.. not that any of the other fish cared  But then, four days later and within a space for four hours, he was dead 8O My poor little Andre was just floating. The middle half of his body scales were a stark white.

I took him out of the tank and put him in a small 7litre tank.. but he only lived for another hour and then died.

I've had some ideas as to what happened, the male Bolivan could of had a go at him (though I seriously doubt that.. but it's a possibility) Though I think that the combination of a change in his total environment after being in the same set up for over a year, and with the added combination of fish to fight off and new, larger territory to defend... I think all this wore him out. I never saw him at a time where he was not showing off.. I'd never seen him like that and he truely looked amazing 8O All the flaring and shaking.. even a tail wack! He was very cool... 8)

Really though, I'm not sure what happened. I really love the Agasizzii's and they are not the easiest fish to get here, I've never seen one for sale since I brought Andre over a year and a half ago. I still have a female on order for him... and it looks like I may have to order in a male *cries*

Thought's and opinions on what my have happened to Andre?

zorella,
Sorry to hear about that! :(
It is entirely possible that the stress of a move, couple with a small spike in the tank may have done him in. Apistos can sometimes be sensative to this. When I move fish from tank to tank, I try and make sure that the biological system is completely stable. Regular water changes in a cycling tank only prolong the cycle. It needs to develope and appropriate level of bacteria to handle waste products produced by newly added fish.
