Can anyone identify this fish I got today & tell more about it, it is in a busy community tank, platies, mollies, white cloud minnows, angels, several tetra species, swordtails etc.

I have a breeding pair of the apisto's.

That is A. cacatuoides. They are a good choice for a wide range of water conditions. THey also do well in community fish tanks.

Apistogramma cacatuoides 'Orange Flash'

These have shown up in LFS all over the country this June, July and early
August under 'Orange Flash,' 'Double Red (sic).' and 'Red Flash." What's clear is that they are an abundant clone of A. caca. Males much larger than females. Fairly peaceful.

OK Thanks guys, I just found two very dead red platys & two lemon tetras (bellies were eaten) since I put the apisto's in, could they have done this mass murder? My tank temps are up to 32deg so maybe it got too hot in this heat & that killed them & other fish ate the dead ones..hopefully I'll know soon before I sit up all night to see what happens under cover of darkness!

peter i doubt that your cacatuoides killed the platys etc, but they would likely eat them when they were dead.

Killer Apistogramma cacatuoides?

Hello Allan,

Rick and I are on the same page here. It's highly unlikely that your Apistogramma cacatuoides killed your platies and tetras. 32-degree C water, however, might have something to do with it.

All the best,

Randall Kohn
