Not necessarily, worms can lay dormant for some time without outward signs, or they can be introduced by new fish. Stress can be a factor in outbreaks, as can poor food, poor water, new fish etc. In these cases it may be best to assume that all of the above are a cause and review each. The treatment for worms and internal parasites involves meds which break down in the tank over a fairly short period of time, so providing you follow the correct dosage it should have no detrimental affect on the tank.

Maybe, maybe not. A "perfect parasite" (co-evolved with its host) does not make its host sick under normal conditions. The longer the host lives, the more successful the parasite will be in making and distributing offspring. Most wild animals and fish (and no doubt many farmed ones too) do carry some parasites at low levels that aren't doing any obvious harm. With certain slow-growing diseases, it may take a couple weeks or months after capture and transport stress before those low levels of bacteria and parasites grow enough to make the fish look sick.

So back to less than desirable water parameters.. most all fish will fall victim to any multitude of disease or parasite in crappy water. It's said that columnaris is present in most all aquariums yet it's not wiping out the tank? When you slack on maintenance and proper fish care? Boom tanks sick.

Agreed -- Poor water conditions, improper diet and stress are responsible for the majority of aquarium fish health problems. Just saying that sometimes they can still get sick even when all the measurable parameters are diet seem to be OK and we're doing everything as best we can.

wow.. im so pleasantly surprised by everyones eagerness to help. The fins are still clamped and the fish stays in the same corner constantly, i acclimate them slowly using the standard methods. No the breathing seems normal
Standard methods?

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
