Spawning

I am starting my first tank, 50 gallons and I am hoping to put some dwarf-cichlids, not sure which ones yet, still planning and other things.

Anyways, I understand they get very aggressive when they reproduce, does this usually happen spontaneously as in it will be out of my control and have to deal with it, or is there some way to prevent them from reproducing so they don't become agressive?

Sure! There is a fool-proof way - Don't put a male and a female of the same species or compatible group in there. Apistogramma, especially, are broken down into groups of the same types of species. These are fish that may or may not breed together, but almost certainly will take part in more aggressive behavior towards each other when in a closed environment.

If you don't want breeding and minimal aggression, but still want some Dwarf Cichlids, you may be limited in your choices. But it is worth saying that, even if you do get a pair of Dwarf Cichlids, there are quite a few choices that won't cause to much havoc in your 50g. tank. Reasearch species and find out what you like and then see if they would fit your needs.
