Slimy Green Algae

I have one tank with a pernicious growth of slimy dark green algae. Algae killer chemicals do not effect it. This stuff coats everything in the tank, plants, rocks, gravel and glass. When siphoning it detaches completely from everything. On some spots, the algae develops bubbles under the surface.

Any suggestions as to what species this is and what do I do short of bleaching the entire tank and throwing out some expensive plants?

BGA aka Blue-green algea is actually a bacteria 'cyanobacteria'. Often it occurs in tanks that are well light with high nutrient levels and low water flow. It can be killed with Erythromycin at the recommended dose, or a 3 day blackout. Niether way will prevent it from coming back, the water circulation must be improved and the light cycle and nutrient levels need to balance out.

The most important thing to do before trying either method is to vacuum out as much as possible, the dead bacteria will certainly overload the bio filter, resulting in an ammonia spike and often recycling the aquarium. So, get all you can out. Choose your method of killing it, and then vacuum it again immediately afterwards, doing a couple more large water changes.

i find most of my algal problems come down to to high a phopshate levels

water chemistry is generally the answer, getting a balance is bettter than using medications
