Hi guys, my Double red Cacatuoides have supprised me today when they brought out the freeswimmers, 256 of them!!! plus looking at the pic ive missed a few so over 260 fry from a single spawning.

I take pics of all my females that produce fry, and then when sorting through them i usually get the pic up on Microsoft paint and count the fry by marking each one off with the brush..

My average spawns are around 60-70 fry, the largest i had before this was from this pair at 157...My question is has there ever been any work done to log fry numbers and average spawns per species??
Whats the largest amount of fry you have had or heard of??

Excuse the writing, im no good at writing with a mouse!!!!!!

Aww silly. You should try to write with a pen or pencil instead. Mice tend to be hard to hold onto and don't keep a sharp point...but seriously.

The largest spawn I've had would be from my Hongsloi super rostrich. I believe it was about the size of your cac spawn. I haven't had the cacs produce spawns that large yet. Pretty impressive. I'd say mine are probably producing about 150 or so but I haven't actually counted any for a while.

First spanws are usually small for me and get larger but not many hit that size...except angelfish which I've had spanws of about 900 fry.

Depends Upon The Specie

Some Apistogrammas are known for higher spawn levels such as A.steindachneri I believe who are somewhat known for 250+ spawns - good thing they are also renown as good parents  The more mature the fish the more feasible it is that they will produce larger broods. My initial steindachneri spawn was 'approx' 70+ while my initial cacatuoides spawn was 35+ / my initial gibbiceps spawn was approx 50+ / my initial jurensis spawn 30+

I had another initial cacatuiodes spawn (different strain) of approx 40+ fry.

I have now mated a male and a female from each of the 2 strains. From the initial cacatuiodes spawn I matured all fish and 1 male was just a touch more elegant than all the others so he is now part of that marriage.

The smaller spawns are more managable obviously.

WOW! I don't think I have ever had an Apisto. have such a large spawn before. Most of the time the larger and older Apisto.'s only produce maybe 70 - 80, at least in my tank's that is the way it works. What size tank are they in? Size of habitat may regulate the number eggs produced in a clutch. I don't know but it sounds good in theory.

in my experience it has a lot to do with how well conditioned the females are and what they are fed.i had one pair of older rams(these were older very intermitent spawners) that spawned around 300 fry(most of my spawns would average between 150 and 175 after they got going good)i've found that fish well fed with earthworms tend to spawn more eggs.i had hypothisized for a long time that spawn size is related to diet and the guy that runs the egg project(sorry can't remember his name)confirmed it in a conversation we had after one of his lectures.he told me he had found in his research that diet had no affect on egg size at all but definitely was a big factor in the number of eggs spawned.
