Should I try and raise myself?

Should I remove eggs and try and raise. I have a 29G with rams and cacatuoides. Early this afternoon, I woke up to find my female ram laid eggs. And then tonight I look and one of my female double reds laid eggs in a pot. So Now I have 2 fish with eggs, aggression alert on high. So do the eggs stand a better chance if I remove them, or should I risk leaving them in and see what happens?

Is this the first time each pair has laid eggs? If so, I think I'd be inclined leave them and see what happens. If the hostility results in some injury, or really serious stress - like somebody stops eating, then I'd pull the eggs.

But, see what some of the more experienced members say...

If your aim is to have the pairs raise them then leave them and see what happens. If both females are busy with their own eggs then they will be kept fine, just keep an eye on the males.

My apisto and rams do not parent raise and I have pulled and raised spawns from them. Just have some microworms or vinegar eels on hand for the ram fry as they are so tiny they may not be able to eat bbs for about a week.

Congrats on the eggs and let us know how it goes.

Well the ram eggs are still there, male guarding over them. I lost the cacatuoide eggs. I think the male ate them. So back to drawing board with them.

For me the main thrill of keeping cichlids has always been seeing the parents protect and raise their fry. My honest opinion is that if the parents are not capable of raising fry, then their genes were not meant to be passed on.
Having said that, there could be other reasons than bad parents when things go wrong.
In any case I would still try do adjust whatever possible with respect to water quality an surroundings before anything else. I would never pull the eggs, but I am pretty fanatic in that respect, I guess:)

All the best,
Lars

I hear ya. I was trying to let them raise, but the eggs are probably within 12 hours of hatching, and I would hate to see them all eaten..Still deciding what to do

By the way, my kribs are currently laying eggs as I type.

Good luck...can you tell it's spring!

If you loose this spawn you can always pull the next one. If the rams and apisto C lay on the same day....pull both. I hatched out a spawn from my blue rams and apisto C together and had no problems. There are many many more rams, but my apisto hatch rate was very low till the last spawn.

My cacatuoide lay was very small. The female is still small, dont know if that has anything to do with number of eggs, but she seems to be back on the prowl. The Rams are on the warpath. Kribs layed in their own 10G. I want the Cacatuoides just cuz I love them, but I really want to see the kribs hatch, cuz I hear so much about their parenting skills. Would love to see them in action
