Hi I have purchased a pair of Agasizzi and was hoping I had a male and female.

All of the agasizziis in the lfs looked similar so I picked two that looked different.

One I'm certain is male but can someone sex this one for me -

It has now developed a black band this gets thicker when near the other Agasizzi -

Here is a pic of the Agassizzi which I def think is male (it's a much bigger fish) -

I am 90% sure they are all males. But sometimes its harder to tell with fish that have been bred to enhance colours.

The middle picture does show a black check stripe and a what looks like a hint of a black leading edge to the pectoral fins which isnt seen in the top picture.

Thanks guys was hoping it was a female I will wait a bit longer to see if colours change if not I will take it back and swap.

As I said before they all looked similar at the store so whether or not they have females or whether they have been bred to enhance colours as someone else said I'm not sure.

I have a pair of cacatuoides and they are very easily sexed.

I think that the top fish could be either a female or subdominant male. Highly colorful domestic strains make it difficult to sex until the fish are over 2"/5 cm long. How large are your fish?

I would say it's about 4cm.

The bigger one is about 5.5cm.

I have noticed the smaller one appears to be getting some black colouration to the top of the pelvic fins but it's not much.

It also goes very pale when the other agasizzii aproaches almost a cream colour.

Female A. agassizii don't show much black on the front edge of the ventral fins (nor do males). I think that you need to give them more time to mature. If the top fish doesn't develop a lot of blue spangles on the face or pointed tips on the dorsal and anal fins, then it most likely is a female. Still, at the size they now are, they should start to show some courtship behavior if the water values are right.
