Hello Bobby,

Pelmatochromis nigrofasciatus males grow to about 5", and females are somewhat smaller. This is a beautifully colored and patterned species from the DR Congo that is not overly aggressive. It is a monogamous, bi-parental open substrate spawner that prefers soft, acidic water at about 76 degrees F.

I've found that this species does better in somewhat larger aquaria; say nothing smaller than 30 gallons. Feeding has never been a problem. They accept a wide variety of foods. Somewhat larger dither fish are tolerated well.

Good luck with them; you've picked a winner!

All the best,

Randall Kohn

Sexing Pelmatochromis nigrofasciatus

Hello Bobby,

Mature male Pelmatochromis nigrofasciatus may be distinguished by their more pronounced dorsal and anal fin extenions and by a more slender body profile. Females possess shorter dorsal and anal fin rays and a more ovoid body profile.

Generally speaking, the fish that lays the eggs tends to be a female.

Good luck!

Randall Kohn
