There are a few threads on the forum, have a look at <"Newbie questions....."> (towards the end of page 1.).

How effective the peat is depends on how hard the water you start with is, and the <"nature of the peat">.

Have a look at <"All the leaves are brown">, it talks about tannins and humic substances more generally.
