Hi guys & gals
well, they did it! I placed another clay pot in the male's favorite spot. the female guarded the pot for 4 or 5 days (in & out, in & out)-and I had fry on saturday morning! I had a great time watching her chase the other fish away & pick the fry up in her mouth & spit them out in another spot if they strayed too far.

the bad news is--I didn't get the yoyo loachs out in time (they ARE out now), but come sunday morning, the fry were gone.

How long before they might spawn again? And what happens when the lights go out? Does the female move the fry back in the cave?

The only fish besides the pair now are: 3 plecos, a school of rummys, an SAE and a horse-faced loach (who spends 98% of the time under gravel) and whom I am still trying to catch.

happy mom for one day-

Dear vancat,

With good feeding and a water change each week, your fish will probably have eggs again in two weeks.

At first, certainly for the first few days, I have witnessed females leading their fry back into the spawning cave. After a point, however, females seem to signal their fry to lay still along the substrate at night. For this reason, it might be a good idea to relocate your loach, when the time comes.

Good luck!

Oh, good!
I am gonna work my tail off to get him outta there by then.

A funny side note: how I caught one of the yoyos was- he had his head stuck in the spawning cave hole (I purposely had made it too small for him to get in). So I nabbed him while he was stuck, the little dope.

Thanks!
and I do perform water changes weekly, and feed well, so I guess as soon as I catch the remaining loach I'm OK...
