Old Tank, New Apisto setup

Hello all. I currently have a planted 29h, 24"×21x12 tank with a Aquaclear 50. Plan to rehome all current stock to a 55g.
I would like to restock centered on a mating pair of apisto. For dithers, pencilfish and marbled hatchetfish.
1. How many of each dither?
2. Any egg safe bottom dwellers?
Thank you in advance.

If a breeding tank, then I would suggest 2 or 3 pencils as target/dither fish. IMHO bottom dwellers shouldn't be put in an apisto breeding tank, but otocinclus and C. hastatus & C. pygmaeus seem to be fairly safe. If you want a community tank (successful apisto breeding isn't a priority) then I think of your tank can handle many more tetras. Just use the standard rules.

Thanks for the response Mike. I prefer spotlighting the Apistos, although i haven't decided what type. Looking for size and color. Still researching. I can skip the bottom dweller. I plan to start the new 55g in a month or so, after it cycles. Then teardown the 29g and start fresh for the pair. I'll keep posting my research finds for feedback. Open to suggestions Thanks again.

Size and color for a beginner in the Apisto hobby? Cacatuoides or related species sounds good for you. The slender bodied fish require a little bit more attention in terms of feeding and selection. Where are you located?

Thanks Shane. I"ve read some of the informative threads related to beginning in the hobby. Cacs and Borelli seem a good choice for beginners. I'm in RI and dont know of any LFS that has any apistos available. Uncle Neds in MA may be my only local importer. Any recommendations?
Thanks again.

I am not an importer by any means, but I have a friend who brings in all sorts of cool stuff. I will have Apistogramma barlowi red face pairs in soon, as well as Apistogramma Baenschi pairs. There are many other species including wild forms of Cacatuoides, so I will let you know. He generally sells fish near the cost of import, so the prices should be a affordable and the quality is generally great (for a wild caught fish).
