Nigerian Red Kribs usually refer to Pelvicachromis taeniatus-Nigerian Red. What you have is a very nice looking male Pelvicachromis pulcher-"red form". He and the female P. pulcher in the picture should be just fine together.

The tell tail sign for a male P. pulcher is the spade shape tail. P. taeniatus have a much more rounded tail-sometimes even forming two very slight lobes (think heart shape) with the upper lobe being just a hair larger.

Yep.. you have P. pulcher. Traditionally the 'Nigeria Red' trade name has always been used for P. taeniatus. It is a tank strain P. taeniatus form, not a wild form. Recently the name has been used for P. pulcher... also tank strains. The fish used to be called P. pulcher 'Super Red', but I guess 'they' needed to sell more so made up a new name.

thanks guys

Is there a female that would show more red ( matching strain ) or will the one I have produce this red color or dilute the strain .

I would like to keep this intense color in thier offspring if possible , the pic doesn't do him justice he is a very bright , deep red .

The "matching" female red color form of P. pulcher looks very much like the standard femael P. pulcher often found in aquarium stores. The "odd ball" looking P. pulcher females are the ones from Isokpo and Ndonga.

Check out page 180 of Lamboj's The Cichlid Fishes of West Africa for photos of these fish and for a better understanding of the color differences.

And don't tell me you don't have the book!!! Any one keeping West African cichlids and looking for info MUST have this book. You should be able to find it from at least one of the major on-line aquarium book sellers, I see them on Aquabid offering the book for A LOT less then what I paid for either of my copies.
