New to Apistos

Hello everyone. I have kept fish for years and finally have decided to dive into Apistos. I picked up a pair of Macateri today but I think my female is a male. If I could get some input that would be great.

If "Macateri" is supposed to mean macmasteri, your fish is most likely a different species. To me it looks more like A. hongsloi. About the sex I can't say much based on this photo. What size is this fish?

somewhere around 1.5-2 inch

If it's 1.5 inch it may still be a subdominant male, if it's 2 inch it's most likely a female.

I thought males where bigger than females.

If it's a subdominant male it can hide it's male features for some time/up to some size, but according to my experience not up to a size of 2 inch, i.e. if it were a 2 inch male, it would look more male-like.
