Hi all. I'm a frequent lurker and infrequent poster. I had a supprise this morning. A little plaque of N. taenia eggs! They are in a 55 gal. tank with a group of young P. subocellatus and some young BN ancistrus. I didn't think they were old enough to spawn yet. The little female is barely over an inch long and is now very dark in coloration. ( I guess it's the female ). No male is around. One of the other taenia is a bit beat up. I wonder if that's the male. This is a great forum, BTW.

Hi all, this is my first post here after some lurking:) I'm 27 and I've been keeping and breeding Dwarf Cichlids (among others) for 15 years.

RonV: I've kept and bred N.taenia a couple of times. The first time was in the late 90's when they were considered extremely rare (well at least here in Norway), and I picked up 2 tiny specimens at a local importer. It didn't take long before they "got down to business", and to my surprise the bigger one turned out to be the female. She was pretty hard on the male, as is known with N.anomala too, but since the tank was 250 liters (approx 120 gal. i believe?) he was able to keep a safe distance and focus on watching the outer territory. They were only about 1-1,5" at this time, but later the male would outgrow the female and ended up at around 2". It's truly a dwarf species! I keep it at the moment in a community tank where they constantly breed ( 1 male and 2 females) but the fry is always gone after about a week or so because it's obviously hard for them to survive in such a hostile environment:) Anyway I consider this species to be easy to breed and raise, just like N.anomala. Good luck with yours!
