I bought an Apisto cacatuoides, and this is what I got. She's solid yellow. All the other pics I've seen of any type of Apisto had stripes. Is this indeed a cacatuoides, and I assume, a female? She's an inch long, and due to the flash, the photos show her lighter in color than she is. She's the color of a lemon drop or a bit lighter.

You probably have a female of the Yellow-gold color strain. Often they show almost no dark markings. You might see markings if you shine a light on it after the tank is totally dark for a while. Personally, I see no problem keeping female bettas - and males with short fins - in a community with small dwarf cichlids.

Thank you, Mike! She was sold to me as an Orange. I learned something new today, that sometimes they don't show the dark markings! I'll try the flashlight bit tonight. Thanks also for your comment about the betta. I have kept female bettas in with the more peaceful dwarf cichlids for years without a single problem. Even a Krib once.

Female betta's are much better off with cichlids I find as the males get very curious about them even my plakat of which now has to live alone. Female betta's are much more placid and not so curious about new fish from my experiance although every betta is different.
I have cichlid's like that but there's a apistgramma which looks very similar just a tiny bit darker which makes me unsure t identify.

Agreed, Unicorn, I'd never put a male betta in with a cichlid of any kind. Well, since I'm not going to be breeding, I don't care that much if she's not a Cacatuoides. I just hope she's not a type that likes soft water as so many of them are, as my PH is 7.6. She did come from a S. California breeder though, and that's where I am, so I'm hoping our waters are pretty much the same. What a personality this little girl has!

Hello everybody I'm new to the forum!

This is funny I have to apistos that look exactly the same as this one! I bought them in a LFS near Sherman Oaks... Saecho is there where you bought them?

One of them is starting to develop some black on the ventral fins... The guys were super small when the LFS got them and neither them or myself are sure of their sex. The smaller one, which I though is a female is pretty territorial with the big one (who has some male characteristics) but they're starting to get along fine, or at least they seem to have made some kind of agreement about their zones in the tank (lol)

I will try to post photos tomorrow :D

Hi Serena, no, I didn't get her from Sherman Oaks. I ordered her online from Bob's Tropical Plants. (I hope it's okay to mention it on this forum) He's in the L.A. area. Sometimes I think mine is starting to get a little bit of color, and other times I think not. It's good that yours are getting along. I'm afraid to put another one in with her, as she chases my male guppy very briefly now and then, and she's smaller than he is. I'm also playing around with the idea of getting a GBR. I've read online that the two should get along. I'd LOVE to see pics of yours!
