Mostly males

I was wondering if anyone knew if A. cacatuoides demonstrated sex dimorphism according to ph or other water factors? In 3 spawns I get dramatically scewed sex ratios in favor of males, 20 to 1. This has been in water of 5dh. hardness with 7.2 ph, and 1dh hardness and 6.2 ph. Any help would be useful. Thanks

Wow.. that is very one-sided. What is the survival rate on the fry? Are you losing a lot of them when they are very small?

Sounds like you keep them a little to hot. A temperature about 79 degrees F should give you a 50/50 ratio. Hardness doesn't matter and pH only a little.

What temperature is your tank?

The tanks that have the pairs are at 79 and 80 degrees. And the survival has been almost 100% once they show up swimming out side the spawning caves. One tank has a single flourescent, non planted, except for some java moss. The other is a fully planted 100g. with metal halide system. Both excellent mothers. Still mystified!

Too bad you don't live near me...I get about 2 males in 20 We could put ours together and sell pairs.

So far in all my batches of fries, I've got equal number of males and female...

Next time you get a spawn try keeping them at 74-75F and see if you get more females than males.

Thanks guys, will try a lower temp and see what happens. I will keep you informed as to the out come. I to wished we lived closer Nightowl1350, we would have it made!
