Hello everyone,

I usually feed my fish in the morning with live or frozen food and in the afternoon with dry food (for those who accept it of course).

I was looking for a good quality industrial food, but nothing seemed satisfactory...

so i thought why not prepare the food myself, i have a dehumidifier and a vacuum packing machine.

I think that a mixture of insects (mealworms, cockroaches...) should be interesting. Most industrial food is made up of very little animal protein and under the pretence of fish or shrimp, the rest is vegetable protein...
I'm not even talking about the price per kg !!

I could simply feed with frozen food of course, but dry food still has a practical side.

do you have any recipes, what do you think?

Well actually ...

Most protein is indeed from animal sources, usually fish as the main source, crustaceans and molluscs are secondary, there are also dry foods that take insect larvae. Mostly black soldier flies. The main ingredients often are grains though, which work as a binder and add unwanted empty calories from the carbs.

Ok, I thought that vegetables were also there to provide protein and inflate the percentage of protein on the nutritional value, like in dog food.

In any case, when the first ingredient is grain, it's not good...

I ordered mealworms, cockroaches, and soldier fly larvae. I'm going to cook ^^

No, mostly for fiber, some vitamins and minerals. And of course food colouring. Not to mention

For example the ingredients of Sera's main food, Vipan. I'd not feed it to cichlids, but nevertheless perfect example. Keep in mind: The number in the list also signifies the percentage of that ingredient. I've noted their respective functional purposes.

Ingredients

fish meal - protein/fats
wheat flour - binder, bit of protein, lots of carbs
brewers yeast - B-vitamins, protein, appetite enticement
Ca-caseinate - protein, fat, ash
crude lecithin - emulsifier
insect meal (Hermetia illucens) (4%) - protein / fats
gammarus meal - fats / protein
spirulina - protein, carbs, fats, minerals, vitamins, fiber, food colouring
whole egg powder - binder / bit of protein
sea algae meal - fiber, fats
mannan oligosaccharides (0.4%) - fiber
cod-liver oil - fat
alfalfa, stinging nettle, parsley, paprika, green-lipped mussel meat meal (also protein source), spinach, carrots, Haematococcus algae - fiber, minerals, vitamins, food colouring
fenugreek seeds, garlic, fennel seeds, anise seeds - appetite enticement, preventive medical properties

As you can see, the veggies are not really counting. It's diffrent powders like yeast, lecithin, caseinate, spirulina, egg powder...
