Hi! I recently have 3 Leatacara dorsigera, 2 of them look like they wanna breed. I have raised L. curviceps and araguaiae but I know almost nothing about sexing dorsigera. They look very similar to me, can you tell me which is the male or the female of if you think they're both the same sex. I have a female araguaiae alone of her specie in a 90g, she's spawning and shake all of her body to an Angel which is quite funny to see!

TANKS!!

All pics are the same fishes. But why do you say that they look like a female or a male, what's the differences? Thanks!

I think your "pair" may be two females. IME (many years ago) adult males have longer and more pointed dorsal and anal fins, more yellow (vs more red in female) in fins, and the dorsal spot is smudged (vs distinct edges in female). Or, if you do have a male, he's young and just hasn't yet developed distinctive male features.

They look like girls to me also but Gerald is correct in stating that one could be a younger male. The interactions in the video so seem to be indicative of a pair. Probably a moot point as they possibly may have spawned already if given half a chance. Good luck.

my female is much darker (also more purple) the male is bigger with longer fins , he has more yellow on him,but he does turn purple when they have babys. first picture is of the male, second picture the female is on the right. ( a good photographer i am not!)

Have others noticed the dorsal spot having a more distinct edge in females vs smudged or blurry-edged in males? Maybe this was just a difference among the particular fish I had and not necessarily a good sex characteristic? I can't see the spots in sasikan's fish.
