Hi,

These fish were sold as Ortmanni (which they are not). Male 1 looks like Steindachneri but the lateral spot shows a lot higher above the lateral line than my steinies (actually my male seems to be showing two laterla spots at the moment?). Female 1 appears to be the same as male 1. Female 2 I'm not sure about. Male 1 and female 1 are probably two of the most aggressive apsitos I have ever had for some reason and the female has managed to dispatch 2 other females. As for male 2 he is something completely different but was in with the same delivery. I hope this all makes sense.Any clues please.

Many Thanks

Mark

I have bought fish that were labeled a. ortamanni that were actually a steichanderi. They were wild caught from Guyana area because I also found two nanaccara anomala that came in the same shipment. The pictures look exactly like the fish that I have. The males do get big compared to other apistos. I have two pairs which one breeds for me all the time. Currently have sixteen fry.

Pictures aren't all good enough for positive IDs, but all appear to be A. steindachneri - except 2a. It looks like A. cf. eunotus to me. 2a must have been added somewhere along the shipping line.

Thanks Mike,

I had kind of figured that they were Steindachneri and the odd male was Eunotus. The Steinie ID had me a little puzzled as the male shows a raised lateral spot almost entirely above the lateral line, but he also is starting to show a lyrate caudal (something he didn't show when I got them only 2 weeks ago). They are very aggressive and the male is in a tank on his own - he's a bit anti-social at the moment. I haven't come across this so strongly before in apistos.

Thanks Again

Mark

Mark,
We have also had fish in recently from Neil Hardys that were on the lists as ortmanii and have turned out to be steindachneri. Looks like they are doing the rounds in the UK at the moment.

Mark,

Your correct with the supplier in question - Hardy's. What I can't quite understand was how a Eunotus got mixed up with them? I'll have a try with these anyway as my other pair keep eating their eggs for some reason - althought they are spawning every 2 weeks or so.
