Hey guys,

I got this fish from the local fish store, labeled A.Steindachneri. I am not sure if it is a Steindachneri. Any ideas what it might be?

hey chris,

yeah, and i am not sure if it is a male or a female. the male steindachneri has the lyretail, which i didnt see.

btw, the apistos you sent me are all doing great, and maybe there is a male agassizii in there after all, i will wait to see when they mature.

I'm no expert but it looks like Smaragd to me

It is hard to say because the photo of the fish shows none of its dark markings. It definitely is not A. steindachneri. It is a regani-group species. A. cf. geisleri Smaragd should have a spotted pattern in the tail. I can't see if it occurs on your fish.

thanks for your help. it does have the spotted markings on the tail, my picture is terrible. i will try to get another picture with better markings.

the giesleri pics do look similar to this fish. is this a male or a female??

It definitely looks like a male.

i have another specimen that is getting beaten up by this fella. i'm gonna post a pic of the other guy (was in the same group of fish at the LFS and labeled steindachneri), soon.
