I know this isn't about plants but it is the only place to put it. I have 2 coconut caves and was wondering if i should cut the half into 1/4's and place them in there like that with a big opening And dig it into the rocks a little bit? or should i cut a little opening into the half of one so they can swim in and out and then just set in on top the gravel?

I use coconut shell halves for my caves. After scraping all the meat and debris from the shell, let it dry a few days then use some sandpaper on the inside to make it nice and smooth.

I drilled oval holes in mine, averaging about the size you can stick your index finger in. I used a round file to make the hole oval. I found they prefer the smaller holes, so I make them a little oval so the male with a taller body can fit.

I also take a small clump of Java Moss and spread it out flat, then I lay it over the top of the shell so it reaches to the bottom. I then fasten it in place by stretching a rubber band over it around the base and clearing some of the moss from around the entrance hole. After a few weeks the rubber band will break and can be removed, by this time the Java Moss has attached to the shell. Occassionally the moss may still be a little loose and a second rubberband may be needed.

I also usually tuck the roots of a Java Fern under the rubber band as well. I find the look of a plant growing out of the moss gives it a more natural appearance than just a ball of Java Moss. After a couple months you wouldn't know a cave was under there.
