tero, there is no right answer to this question. it will depend on species and individual fish temperment, other tankmates and how you decorate the tank.

you can get more breeding pairs of apistos in 12 10 gal tanks than you can in a 125.

Aspens answer is quite correct. There is variability from species to species and individual to individual. However, a better way to go about stocking your one 125 is to approach it from this standpoint. "What is the amount of apistos that I can put into my tank that will make it both interesting for me and safe for them." I think that you can probably put 4 species (pairs or trios) into a well-structured 125, maintaining a high standard of husbandry and probably achieving results with some breeding. However, even in that large a tank, long-term fry care will be a problem. Therefore, we are back to aspen's point that 12 tanks are better than one, because you can safely house the parents and probably their fry(for awhile) in a 10 with no serious threat from predation.
