I`m trying my hand at a few new apistos. My conditions are less than ideal (high ph, high gh and kh). They do breed but I get very small batches of fry (10 or so) and low survival rate. I`m wondering if it`s the water`s fault. I was under the impression if it was good enough for the adults to breed in, it would be good enough to raise the fry in but is that the case?

Depending on the species, water values can be very critical to the hatching & growth rates of the fry - as you have discovered.
