Hi,
I am new to this forum. I am from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Nice to meet everyone. My question is, I have a 30 gallon tank and have always wanted to try keeping german blue rams. How many can I keep in this size tank? Are rams multi level fish? Would a tank of just rams be interesting? Or do they like to just stay at the bottom? I am sure that I will have many many more questions.

Hi Kemppy,

Welcome to the forum. A 30 is a nice size for rams. I would imagine you could keep more than one pair, but with appropriate decor. Lots of hiding places and the like. Mind you, when I kept rams I had a pair only in a 20. They'll be bottom oriented fish as cichlids tend to be.

I like to keep dither fish with rams. They can be a little shy, especially with just a pair. Sometimes a half dozen in a tank will interact enough to keep each other stirred up a bit. Good dithers are pencil fish, platies or smaller danio/rasbora/tetra species. THE rams hang out on the bottom, so may not appreciate having to share space with cories or other active, bottom dwelling fish.
