Let's try a different approach to ordering products. I will organize a group order from Hanna Instruments to be placed on February 17, 2003. Any item in the Hanna catalog is available, but I am going to list the meters that are more applicable to aquarium keeping. The prices listed a group order prices, and represent a 10% discount off of the suggested retail prices. Wholesale cost is only about 23% below suggested retail cost.... and Hanna does not pay for shipping.

pH meters:
pHep4 (HI 98127) $54.00
pHep (HI 98107) $36.00

EC/TDS meters
DiST5 (HI 98311) $59.00
DiST4 (HI 98304) $39.00

Combo meter EC/TDS/pH/temp
(HI 98129) $118.00

Solutions:
460mL or 500mL (they are switching to 500 mL) bottles (any type) $12.00
boxes of 25 sachets (any type) $20.00

Visit www.hannainst.com to see the catalog or read teh specs on any meter.

Please place your order through a private message to me. The group order will be placed on the morning of February 17, 2003. These items will need to be pre-paid.

Thanks!

I have had a few questions regarding measuring KH... There is not a meter that will measure it. Hanna Instruments, however, does sell reagent grade chemical test kits for hardness, and they are not nearly as expensive as I thought that they would be. They sell different kits for different value ranges. The two that I think would be most valuable for us would be:

HI 3812 - 50 tests each for 0-30 mg/L and 0 - 300 mg/L : $17.00

HI 3840 - 50 tests for 0 - 150 mg/L : $7.00

Those prices are the regular price. If you want them on the group order they will be $15 & $5, respectively.

The last time I looked the LFS test kits for hardness were a lot more expensive than $5/50 tests!!!!

I am definitely going to get the $5.00 kit for myself on the group order. I will also get a few to stock in the Store at $7.00.

The order is going in on Monday. We have not gotten much response. If you are at all contemplating getting a meter at these lower prices, now is your chance. I do not think that we will try a group order for Hanna Instruments again for a while.

I had a PM that asked what the advantage of having a meter is when a top of the line pH test kit could be purchased for $10.00. I would say that a pH test kit that can provide 100 tests would be a lot more expensive for me to use than my meter. My meter also measures EC/TDS, so that is two test kits that it is replacing. How often to I test? Every tank, every day.. usually more than once. I measure the parameters during water several times. Once for the water in the tank, and several more getting the new water adjusted correctly. I have 9 aquariums at home, and 3 in my classroom at school. My meter travels with me to and from work.

I kept track of the number of times I tested with the meter yesterday. I did two water changes at school and three at home. The total number of times I took a reading yesterday (including checking on the tanks that did not get a water change) came out to 23... both EC/TDS and pH. If that were my average, I would use the before mentioned test kits up in 5 days.

I never tested my water this much before getting my meter. I have not had as much immediate success with breeding softwater fish as I have had in the past two months either. I do give credit to the meter. Once I knew exactly what was happening with the EC/TDS and pH in my tanks, I was able to make the right adjustments. The result has been more stable and appropriate environments for my fish. I have baby Pelvicachromis subocellatus 'matadi', Pel. taeniatus 'nyete' and Pel. t. 'lobe' to show for it. I have had these fish spawnig for me for a while... now I have groups of living, growing fry!

The group order cost on the meter I have (Hanna Combo meter) and 5 bottles of solutions (three calibrations solutions, cleaning solution and storage solution) works out to be $178.00. If I was paying $20.00 a month for test kits, my yearly cost would be $240. Next year all I will have to buy are more solutions. If the pH electrode needs replacing, that will only cost me $30. The ease of use, accuracy and precision of the meter is what sold it to me... the money savings is just an added bonus.

Please contact me if you want in on the order. Meters and solutions will still be available through the store after the group order, but at higher prices.

All,

I had a PM that asked what the advantage of having a meter is when a top of the line pH test kit could be purchased for $10.00.

There is absolutely no comparison between the 2. Besides the ease of use and convenience, the accuracy is extremely valuable. This may seem unimportant, but if you ever want to deal with very acidic loving fish, there are no pH test kits that you can really rely on. And, if you ever have a pH crash, it is very helpful to know whether you are dealing with a crash at 3.2 or 2.2.
The combo meters are in another world as far as their applicability to the soft-water Dwarf keeper! The difference between 15-20 minutes to measure 1 tank by test kits or 1-2 min. via the meter over the course of a year is ridiculous. How valuable is your time!?
If you can afford a meter, get it. You won't believe why you were questioning the cost/benefit issue after you do. The price that Ted is selling these quality meters is great. I still have 2 perfectly good pH and 1 TDS meters because I realized how valuable it would be for me to have the combo.

I did buy one of those meters, and I have no regrets. It is a great instrument. I suggest you find one and buy it.
