Gold Ram vs. Keyhole

My gold ram and my keyhole ciclid are picking on each other. This is odd to me because I was told keyholes are extremely peaceful for a cichlid, but that is the one starting the fights. Could this mean that it is a male, (because my ram is a male )and they are fighing for territory?

Just becase they are picking on each other doesn't mean that they are not considered some of the most peaceful Dwarf Cichlids. They are still Cichlids and aggression kind of goes with the territory. As long as no-one is getting too beat up, I wouldn't worry much. They are just establishing a pecking order in the tank. Regardless of whether you have males or females, this is likely to happen.

I have a lone keyhole housed in my apisto tank. He/she (not exactly sure which) is the most peaceful dwarf in the tank but will put the smaller apistos in there place is need be. My keyhole would rather be passive but will not allow itself to be picked on!

ok see I was told keyholes are generally pushovers, but not my little guys! good to know there isnt any problems. Thanks!

try putting 2 pieces of slate or a flat stone into the furthest back corners. each will guard their own. i find that providing a place for each fish to call home tends to limit agression among cichlids. both of those fish are slate spawners.
