Depending on the age of the fish, there are several points of distinction. Males exhibit extended second or third dorsal rays, a ruddy nose and a pure black blotch on the flanks situated above the mid lateral line. Females, on the other hand, do not exhibit dorsal ray extensions to the extend that males do, but do display a pinkish belly, a rounder body profile and their black flank blotch usually exhibits some bluish-green iridescent dots.
Angelman,
IME the most conclusive method of gender determination in rams is the lateral spot that Randall mentions. Fins, size and color can be tricky sometimes. But the speckles (or the lack thereof) in the spot on the side of the fish almost always works.
